How We Work

CMLS offers a brand new way of doing business with professional legal services providers outside your government or law firm. Using the widely acclaimed collaborative project management website Basecamp from 37 Signals, CMLS creates a special password-protected website for your project. You decide which individuals in your organization or office get access to the various kinds of content on that site: tasks, assignments, deadlines, and — best of all — your documents.

Instead of delivering documents via fax, which renders the text unsearchable by computer technology, or by email, which is often untrustworthy and not sufficiently secure for confidential communications, CMLS uploads your documents to the secure Basecamp website, to which only you and your designated employees or officials will have access. That access is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You then download those documents to your computer, as often and to as many different machines as you wish. The documents stay on the website for up to 30 days past the completion date of the assigned project, and are then removed. However, they remain securely on CMLS servers, so if you ever need another copy, it’s available for free — forever.

Those documents include not only the finished product (the memorandum, the ordinance, the opinion, etc.), but the backing research as well as PDF files. You’ll have everything you need to do your job at your disposal.
